HISTORY
In 1920, the concept of a library began with the donation of books by the local
Literacy Club and were housed in a small room in the basement of the school. A meeting
was held in early 1925 to appoint trustees and an application for incorporation was
submitted to the State Education Department. On March 20, 1925 the official opening of
the library was held. The library received strong support from the school administration.
Financial help was received from bake sales held by women of the village and library
patrons paid annual dues of $1.00. The library received its provisional charter on April
25, 1925 and an absolute charter in 1978. The library continued to function in the small
room at the school until the late 1980's. With monies from generous benefacators Imogene
Tallcott and Robert Royal as well as grants from the Pratt Northam Foundation and the
State Education Department, the library purchased and renovated the former Mangan Store.
The renovation was completed in the fall of 1987. The library serves the Village of Port
Leyden and the Townships of Leyden and Lyonsdale.
